Waterfall Tall Norwegian waterfall cascading from steep mountain slopes
High waterfall near Loen in western Norway cascading from glacial slopes; hikers and photographers visit viewpoints along nearby roads and trails.
Ramnefjellsfossen is a large cascading waterfall on the slopes of Ramnefjell in Vestland county, western Norway, where steep mountain faces drop toward the valley and the nearby glacial lakes.
The waterfall is best known for its very high, multi-tiered drop and seasonal flow that varies with snowmelt and glacier runoff; it is visually impressive but not easily approached from the main roads. The mountain slopes in this area were the site of major rockslides in the early 20th century that caused destructive waves on adjacent lakes and affected nearby settlements.
The waterfall lies inland in Vestland’s mountainous fjord landscape, with viewpoints best reached from local roads and lake-based approaches rather than direct roadside access.
- Historic rockslides: The mountain slope above the waterfall was the source of major rockslides in the early 20th century that triggered deadly waves on the downstream lake and led to significant local loss of life.
