Taiwan’s Rainbow Village in Taichung is a small painted veterans’ settlement turned public art site; visitors come for colourful murals, street photography and a story about local preservation.
Rainbow Village is a small former military dependents’ village in Taichung, Taiwan, transformed into a public folk-art site by a local resident from around 2008. It is notable for its vivid, figurative murals and bright palette.
A compact cluster of brightly painted houses and narrow lanes decorated with animal, human and abstract motifs. The artwork covers exterior walls, doors and pavements across the village, creating multiple short photo spots and walk-through scenes.
The village was painted and maintained by veteran resident Huang Yung-Fu beginning in about 2008; local students and preservation advocates campaigned to prevent demolition and the area was preserved as a cultural attraction. Its survival has been attributed to the artist’s work and community support.
Situated in Taichung city (Nantun area), the site sits close to the National Taichung University of Education and other central Taichung neighborhoods, within easy reach of the city’s urban transport.
