Ragusa Cathedral (Duomo di San Giorgio) is the principal Baroque cathedral of Ragusa Ibla in southern Sicily. It is noted for its ornate 18th century Sicilian Baroque façade, dome and prominent staircase.
The cathedral’s exterior features a richly decorated Baroque frontage and a wide flight of steps that lead up from the piazza, giving panoramic views over the old town. Inside, the nave, chapels and dome display Baroque decoration from the post-earthquake rebuilding period.
The present cathedral was rebuilt in the 18th century following the destructive 1693 earthquake that led to widespread reconstruction across southeastern Sicily. The church replaced an earlier medieval structure and was constructed as part of the wider Baroque rebuilding of Ragusa.
It occupies a high position in Ragusa Ibla, the historic quarter of Ragusa in Sicily, and is a central architectural and visual landmark within the town.
