Ragunan Zoo is a major zoological park serving Jakarta and its metropolitan population, set within a substantial urban green space. The zoo displays a wide range of Indonesian fauna alongside some non-native species and provides public education and recreation.

Enclosures are arranged across the park with highlights often including primates, birds and larger mammals native to Indonesia. The site offers pathways and viewing areas designed for families and school visits, with interpretive signage and occasional special exhibits.

The zoo developed as Jakarta’s main public zoological facility over the 20th century and continues to focus on public education, animal display and local conservation messaging. Management and exhibit layouts have changed over time to respond to welfare and visitor requirements.

Ragunan Zoo is located in the southern part of the Jakarta metropolitan area and is accessed by road from central Jakarta. It is commonly visited by local families, schools and tourists seeking wildlife viewing within the city.

  • Role and focus: Operates as Jakarta's principal zoological park with programmes for public education and species display rather than large-scale international breeding projects.

  • Main animal enclosures: Large planted enclosures and themed areas that house native and exotic species, with sections focused on primates and birds.
