Radcliffe Camera
Area Iconic circular Oxford library and reading room
Circular 18th-century reading room in Oxford forming part of the Bodleian Library; photographed for its Palladian architecture and visited by those touring university colleges.
The Radcliffe Camera is a circular stone library building in central Oxford, England, built in the mid-18th century to house the Radcliffe Science Library; it was designed by architect James Gibbs and financed from the bequest of Dr John Radcliffe.
The building’s distinctive round plan and classical façade make it an architectural landmark in Oxford, and it forms a central element of the Bodleian Library complex. Its interior contains reading rooms used by university members and the building is closely integrated with adjacent university libraries and passageways.
Construction took place in the 1730s and 1740s and the structure has since been used as a library and reading room within the Bodleian system. Over time it has been linked to neighbouring library buildings and conservation has preserved its stonework and interior fittings.
The Radcliffe Camera stands in Radcliffe Square at the heart of Oxford’s historic university precinct, immediately adjacent to the Bodleian Library and other central college buildings, making it an easy walk from other central Oxford sites.
- Access and viewing: The best exterior views are from Radcliffe Square; interior access is restricted to library members but guided tours of the Bodleian complex include the Camera on some schedules.
What to See #
- Reading rooms: The principal interior reading rooms form part of the Bodleian Library complex and are used by students and researchers; public access is limited and controlled by library regulations.
- Radcliffe Square viewpoint: Radcliffe Square provides a compact pedestrian plaza offering unobstructed views of the building's circular stone façade and is the main public vantage point used in most photographs.
How to Get to Radcliffe Camera #
Radcliffe Camera sits in Radcliffe Square in central Oxford. From Oxford Railway Station walk north along Park End Street onto High Street and then into Radcliffe Square - roughly a 15-20 minute walk (about 1 km). If driving, follow the A420/High Street into the city centre; parking is limited so most visitors arrive on foot or by local buses that serve the city centre (get off on Park End Street/High Street and walk a few minutes).
Tips for Visiting Radcliffe Camera #
- Visit early on a weekday or in the late afternoon to avoid the peak tour-bus and campus-visit crowds that gather around Radcliffe Square mid-day, especially during term and graduation periods.
- You cannot enter the Radcliffe Camera freely - interior access is restricted to Bodleian readers or visitors on the official Bodleian guided tours, so book a Bodleian tour in advance if you want to see the reading rooms.
- For the classic views, shoot the building from across Radcliffe Square (the south side) and from the nearby college spires - the exterior architecture is best appreciated from the square rather than trying to peer through gates.
Best Time to Visit Radcliffe Camera #
Go outside the peak summer months or early on weekday mornings to avoid the largest crowds and have easier access to the building and nearby tours.
