Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge

Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge is a U.S. National Wildlife Refuge on the southern coast of Maine established in 1966 and named for marine biologist Rachel Carson. It was created to protect coastal estuaries, salt marshes, barrier beaches, and islands that provide habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife.

The refuge consists of numerous noncontiguous units along the Maine coast and protects a mix of tidal marshes, mudflats, and small offshore islands that are important for shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors. Public access varies by unit; some sites include trails and observation points for birdwatching and shoreline exploration while others are managed primarily for conservation.

Originally designated to safeguard vulnerable coastal habitats, the refuge has been managed to conserve nesting and feeding areas for migratory species and to provide opportunities for compatible public uses such as wildlife observation and environmental education. Management includes habitat protection, monitoring, and limited public facilities at select units.

The refuge occupies sections of the southern Maine coastline, with units and access points near towns such as Wells and other communities along the Gulf of Maine. Headquarters and visitor information are located at the primary administrative site in the Wells area.
