Qumran is an archaeological site on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea in the West Bank, known for the settlement ruins and the nearby cave complexes where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. The site is associated with late Hellenistic to early Roman-period occupation and significant manuscript discoveries.
Significant visible features at the site include a tower, communal buildings, workshops, and multiple ritual baths, along with storage areas and burial installations. The nearby caves yielded the scrolls first discovered in 1947 and subsequently explored through the 1950s, providing a major corpus of ancient Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts.
Excavations of the settlement were undertaken in the mid 20th century and have informed debates about the identity and practices of the site’s inhabitants, including their chronology and relationship to the texts found in the caves.
Qumran sits on the arid escarpment overlooking the Dead Sea, close to its shore at the lake’s northwest edge and within the broad Dead Sea basin. The site is accessed via regional roads from nearby towns and the Jordan Rift Valley.
