Mountain Sacred Taoist mountain near Dujiangyan with ancient temples
Close to Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng is a Taoist mountain with centuries‑old temples, forested paths and pilgrimage routes; visitors hike shaded trails and explore Taoist architecture and gardens.
Mount Qingcheng is a Taoist mountain in Sichuan province, China, and one of the most important centers of Taoism; it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 alongside the Dujiangyan Irrigation System.
The site contains dozens of temples, pavilions and stone inscriptions set on forested slopes, with a mix of short paved walks and longer hiking trails. The scenic area is commonly split into two main areas - a Front Mountain with developed visitor facilities, stairways and a cable car, and a Rear Mountain offering more remote forest trails and viewpoints. Trails connect temple complexes and offer shaded walks of several kilometers between principal sites.
Qingcheng has been a center of Taoist ritual and practice for many centuries and its temple buildings were built, rebuilt and expanded across imperial dynasties from medieval times through the Qing. Many surviving halls and courtyards reflect repeated restorations rather than a single original construction phase.
The mountain sits northwest of Chengdu in a forested range near the city of Dujiangyan, roughly 60 kilometers from central Chengdu, in central Sichuan.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 together with the Dujiangyan Irrigation System.
- Visiting tips: Best visited in spring or autumn when the mountain is least fogged and trails are drier; cable car shortens the route to higher temples.
What to See #
- Front Mountain / Rear Mountain: Divided into a developed Front Mountain area with paved paths, temples and a cable car, and a wilder Rear Mountain with forested hiking trails and quieter temple sites.

From Qingchengshan station a local shuttle or a 10-15 minute walk brings you to the lower scenic-area entrances of Mount Qingcheng.

Tips for Visiting Mount Qingcheng #
- Go early in the morning (weekday if possible) to avoid the day‑tripper crowds from Chengdu-front mountain trails and the main cable car fill up by mid‑morning.
- Use the front (east) entrance if you want the quicker route with cable‑car access to major Taoist temples; choose the back (rear) mountain trails for quieter, less‑visited temples and forested sections.
- Allow time to walk beyond the main temples-many visitors stop at the first clusters, but the rear‑mountain trails reward quieter shrine visits and better forested scenery.
