How to Get to Quilicura
Quilicura is a northern suburb/commune of Santiago accessed mainly via Santiago's main airport, Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez (SCL), and by the city's bus network. There is no commercial airport or direct Metro station in Quilicura, so most travelers arrive at SCL and continue by bus, taxi or ride-hail into the commune.
Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL): The main gateway for international and domestic flights to Santiago. From SCL you can take the airport shuttle buses (Centropuerto / TurBus) to Pajaritos or Estación Central - tickets are approximately CLP 1,500-3,000 and the ride to central Santiago takes about 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. From those hubs catch a Red Metropolitana bus or a short taxi/ride-hail to Quilicura.
Comuna/Heliports (limited/private): Quilicura itself does not have a commercial airport; occasional private or military airfields exist in the region but they are not a practical option for regular arrivals. Expect to use SCL for scheduled flights and then ground transport to reach Quilicura.
Train: Quilicura is not directly served by the Metro de Santiago or intercity passenger rail. The closest major rail hub is Estación Central / Pajaritos (Metro Line 1 and intermodal bus connections); from there you can transfer by bus or taxi to Quilicura. A single Metro/bus trip in Santiago costs about CLP 830 (use the Bip! card) and travel from Pajaritos to central Santiago stations takes roughly 20-40 minutes.
Bus: Quilicura is served by Santiago’s Red Metropolitana de Movilidad (the city bus network). Local bus routes connect Quilicura with nearby metro stations and with Estación Central; a single bus fare is around CLP 830 (integrated fare with transfers using the Bip! card). Travel times to the city centre are typically 30-60 minutes depending on route and traffic; for longer regional journeys use the main intercity terminals at Estación Central/Terminal Alameda.
How to Get Around Quilicura
Getting around Quilicura works best by combining Red Metropolitana buses with short ride-hail or taxi hops to reach the Metro. Buses + a topped-up Bip! card are the most cost-effective; use ride-hailing when you need speed, comfort or late-night travel. For short local errands, cycling or walking are convenient.
- Red Metropolitana buses (CLP 830) - The most practical way to get into and around Quilicura is the Red Metropolitana bus network. Multiple routes run between Quilicura, nearby metro stations and Estación Central; expect frequent stops and variable journey times in peak traffic. Pay with a Bip! card (reload at kiosks or stations) - single fare is about CLP 830, and transfers within the system are handled by the integrated fare rules.
- Metro de Santiago (nearest stations) (CLP 830) - Quilicura currently has no Metro station, so you typically take a bus or short taxi to the nearest Line 1 hubs such as Pajaritos / Estación Central. The Metro is faster for reaching central Santiago once you connect to it. Standard metro fare is the same Bip! fare (around CLP 830) and peak hours can be very busy.
- Ride-hailing (Uber, DiDi, Beat) (CLP 2,000-15,000) - Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Santiago and are convenient for door-to-door trips to/from Quilicura, especially off-peak or when carrying luggage. Prices are variable; short trips inside the commune might be CLP 2,000-5,000 while rides to central Santiago typically run CLP 6,000-15,000 depending on distance and surge pricing. Watch for surge at peak times and confirm fare estimates in-app.
- Official taxis / airport taxi services (CLP 18,000-35,000) - Metered taxis and official airport taxis operate throughout Santiago; an airport taxi from SCL to Quilicura is usually a flat or metered fare in the CLP 18,000-35,000 range depending on traffic. Taxis are useful late at night or when public transport is inconvenient - agree a price or ensure the meter is used for clarity.
- Bicycle & scooters (CLP 500-2,500 (short trips)) - Quilicura has a mix of residential streets and industrial areas; there are some bike lanes and cycling is practical for short trips. Shared electric scooters and private bikes are available in parts of Santiago and can be useful for first/last-mile connections, but watch for heavy traffic on main roads and limited dedicated infrastructure in some neighbourhoods.
- Walking - Walking is the best option for short neighbourhood trips within Quilicura - distances are generally short in the residential areas. Pavements are present in most built-up zones but can be narrow near industrial sectors; avoid walking alone late at night on poorly lit industrial streets.
