Quentovic Archaeological Site

Quentovic was a medieval port and trading emporium on the Channel coast of northern France, active mainly between the 6th and 11th centuries CE. It served as a major point of maritime trade and contact between the Frankish realms and Anglo-Saxon England.

Historical sources and archaeological excavations locate the site near the mouth of the River Canche, close to the modern town of Étaples in Hauts-de-France. Material finds and historical records attest to its importance for cross-Channel commerce, customs and ship traffic during the early Middle Ages.

Over time the port declined in importance and was abandoned by the later Middle Ages as coastal and riverine conditions changed and alternative ports emerged.

The site lies on the northern coast of France at the Canche estuary, within the Pas-de-Calais department, a short distance from contemporary coastal towns and the English Channel.

The archaeological traces traditionally associated with Quentovic lie on the Channel coast near Étaples and La Calotterie in Hauts-de-France. From Boulogne-sur-Mer take the D940 east toward Étaples, then local roads toward La Calotterie; much of the terrain is best explored by foot. The nearest rail access is Étaples-Le Touquet station (SNCF), about 3-6 km from the important field sites; arrange a taxi or cycle from there.

• Visit at low tide if you plan to walk the coastal plain - the landscape that once fed the harbour reveals old channels and saltmarsh birds.
• Bring waterproof footwear and a good map/GPS: the precise traces of Quentovic are scattered across farmland and dunes rather than a tidy ruin.
