Quattro Canti
Plaza Baroque octagonal square in Palermo with sculpted fountains
In Palermo the Baroque junction called Quattro Canti marks the crossing of Via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele; four curved facades with statues and fountains attract photographers and architecture students.
Quattro Canti, formally Piazza Vigliena, is a Baroque urban intersection in central Palermo where Via Maqueda crosses the Cassaro (Corso Vittorio Emanuele). It was created in the early 17th century as a theatrical focal point in the city’s street plan.
The square’s four concave corner façades are uniformly articulated in three levels with niches, fountains and statues that together form a symmetrical ensemble representing seasonal, dynastic and civic themes. The result is an intentionally staged urban space at a major crossroads.
Commissioned during Palermo’s period under Spanish rule, the square was completed in the early 1600s and has undergone periodic restoration. It functions today as a central meeting point within Palermo’s historic center.
Quattro Canti sits at the heart of Palermo’s centro storico, at the junction of two principal streets and within walking distance of Palermo Cathedral and other civic landmarks.
- Sculptural program: Each corner facade has three tiers of sculpture representing the seasons, Spanish rulers of Sicily and the city's patronesses, making the intersection a compact sculptural program.
