Qionglai Mountains
Mountains Sichuan mountain range with diverse forests and wildlife
West of Chengdu, the Qionglai range holds dense forests, high peaks and protected areas including Wolong. Travelers visit for multi‑day treks and panda habitat reserves.
The Qionglai Mountains are a north-south mountain range in western Sichuan Province that form part of the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The range contains high-elevation forests, deep valleys and significant biodiversity.
The area is important for conservation, supporting montane forests and wildlife including populations of the giant panda; parts of the range are included in the network of reserves recognised for panda conservation. Outdoor activities in accessible sectors include hiking, wildlife observation and mountain scenery viewing.
The Qionglai range has long acted as a geographic barrier between the Chengdu Plain and the higher Tibetan-influenced plateaus to the west, shaping local climate and human settlement patterns.
The mountains lie to the west of Chengdu in Sichuan Province and run roughly north to south across the province.
