How to Get to Qionghai
Qionghai (Hainan) is easiest reached via the nearby Qionghai Bo'ao Airport (BAR) or by high-speed rail on the Hainan Eastern Ring. Haikou Meilan (HAK) and Sanya (SYX) airports are practical alternatives when flying from farther afield; transfer to Qionghai by HSR or coach.
Qionghai Bo’ao Airport (BAR): Qionghai’s local airport is Qionghai Bo’ao Airport (IATA: BAR), the closest option for arrivals. From BAR you can take an airport shuttle bus to Qionghai/Bo’ao (typically around CNY 20-30, 30-40 minutes) or a taxi (typically CNY 50-80, ~20-30 minutes) depending on traffic.
Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK): For more international and domestic connections use Haikou Meilan. From HAK you can transfer to the Hainan Eastern Ring high-speed rail (via Haikou railway/Haikou East station) and reach Qionghai by HSR in roughly 40-60 minutes; HSR second-class tickets on this corridor typically cost in the CNY 25-40 range. A taxi or airport shuttle from HAK to Haikou’s railway stations is usually 30-50 minutes and costs CNY 40-80 depending on traffic.
Train: Qionghai is served by Qionghai Railway Station on the Hainan Eastern Ring High-Speed Railway, which links Haikou in the north with Sanya in the south. Typical HSR journey times: Haikou-Qionghai ~40-60 minutes and Sanya-Qionghai ~2-2.5 hours; second-class fares on these legs generally fall in the CNY 25-90 range depending on distance.
Bus: Long-distance coaches run to Qionghai from Haikou, Wenchang, Wanning and Sanya; services arrive at the city’s main bus/coach station (Qionghai Passenger Transport Station). Bus trips are usually slower but cheaper than HSR - for example Haikou-Qionghai buses commonly take 1.5-2.5 hours and cost around CNY 20-40. Local city buses are very inexpensive (often CNY 1-3) and cover most urban routes.
How to Get Around Qionghai
Getting around Qionghai is straightforward: use the Hainan Eastern Ring HSR for intercity travel and taxis, Didi or e-bikes for local mobility. For budget travel, local buses and intercity coaches are cheap but slower; renting an e-bike gives flexibility for short coastal explorations.
- High-speed rail (Hainan Eastern Ring) (CNY 25-90) - The Hainan Eastern Ring HSR is the fastest and most reliable way to get to and from Qionghai within Hainan. Trains call at Qionghai Railway Station and link directly with Haikou and Sanya; book in advance in peak season. Trains are frequent, comfortable and punctual - ideal for intercity travel.
- Taxis (CNY 10-80) - Taxis are widely available and convenient for door-to-door travel, especially if you have luggage or are heading to Bo'ao resorts. Short urban fares are affordable; negotiate or insist on the meter in tourist areas. Expect fares of roughly CNY 10-40 within the city and more for airport transfers.
- Local buses (CNY 1-3) - City buses and minibuses cover most neighbourhoods and are the cheapest option for getting around Qionghai. Fares are typically very low (often CNY 1-3); however, routes can be infrequent and signage may be limited for non-Chinese speakers. Carry small change and ask your hotel for the best routes.
- Intercity coaches (CNY 20-60) - Long-distance coaches connect Qionghai with Haikou, Wenchang, Wanning and other Hainan towns; they are slower than HSR but sometimes more direct for certain destinations. Coaches depart from the main bus station and are a budget-friendly alternative, especially outside HSR timetables.
- Bike / e-bike rentals (CNY 5-30) - Renting a bicycle or an electric bike is a popular way to explore Qionghai and nearby coastal areas at your own pace. Rentals are inexpensive (hourly or daily rates) and convenient for short trips; wear a helmet and be cautious on busy roads. E-bikes are widely available and useful for slightly longer distances.
- Ride-hailing (Didi) (CNY 15-100) - Didi works in Qionghai and offers a convenient alternative to street taxis, with transparent pricing and cashless payment. Use it for airport transfers, trips to Bo'ao, or when taxis are scarce. Surge pricing can apply during peak periods or holidays.
- Walking - Qionghai's central neighbourhoods and waterfront areas are pleasant to explore on foot; walking is often the fastest way to get between nearby shops, restaurants and hotels. Sidewalk quality varies, so wear comfortable shoes and watch for local traffic.
