Qesem Cave
Cave Prehistoric archaeological cave near Tel Aviv with ancient hearths
Lower Paleolithic cave near Rosh HaAyin with long-term hominin occupation and early evidence of controlled fire; attracts archaeologists and visitors interested in prehistoric finds and on-site displays.
Qesem Cave is a prehistoric archaeological site in Israel’s Central District that preserves repeated human occupation during the Lower Paleolithic, roughly between 400,000 and 200,000 years ago. Excavations have produced large assemblages of stone tools, animal bones and hearth remains.
The site is notable for evidence of controlled use of fire across stratified layers and for a blade-oriented lithic technology that appears standardized across long time spans. These finds have contributed to debates on hominin behavior, subsistence and technological organization in the Levant.
Excavations at Qesem Cave were carried out by Israeli archaeological teams beginning in the early 2000s; fieldwork revealed the stratified sequence, hearths and large faunal assemblages that demonstrate repeated, long-term use of the cave by hominins.
The cave sits near the modern town of Rosh HaAyin in the central coastal plain of Israel, within the Central District and roughly east of the greater Tel Aviv metropolitan area.
- Deep prehistoric sequence: Occupational deposits date to roughly 400,000-200,000 years ago and the site has provided evidence for habitual use of fire and standardized flake production in the Lower Paleolithic sequence.
- Location and access: Located near the modern town of Rosh HaAyin, the site lies within the Central District of Israel and is accessible for study rather than general tourism.
