Qatna

Qatna is an archaeological site and ancient city-state in western-central Syria, located in Homs Governorate and notable for its Bronze Age palace, tombs and urban remains. It was a major political centre in the second millennium BCE with substantial ruins visible at the mound and surrounding lower town.

Key elements of the site include a large palace complex, extensive city walls and a royal necropolis where richly equipped burials have been excavated. The archaeology documents long-distance connections and the city’s role within regional networks of the ancient Near East.

The city flourished during the Bronze Age as an independent polity and later came under the influence of larger regional powers. Excavations over the 20th and 21st centuries have revealed architecture and grave assemblages that illuminate its political and cultural importance.

Qatna’s tell lies near the modern village of al-Mishrifeh in Homs Governorate, inland from Syria’s Mediterranean coast in the western part of the country.
