Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi

Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi is an Umayyad-era desert palace and fortified complex in Homs Governorate in central Syria, dating to the early 8th century. It was commissioned by the Umayyad caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik and served as a rural administrative and residential center.

The site contains a large enclosed courtyard, the remains of a small mosque, a bath complex, and evidence of water-management works and outbuildings. Architectural highlights include surviving sections of outer walls and corner towers that outline the original defensive enclosure. The layout shows both residential and utilitarian spaces rather than a single monumental building.

Built around the early 700s CE under Umayyad direction, the complex functioned as a rural palace and estate center supporting local agriculture and administration. Over time it fell into ruin and has been subject to archaeological survey and conservation work in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The site sits in the Syrian Desert within Homs Governorate. It occupies an isolated location away from large urban centers amid arid plains and seasonal wadis.
