Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi is an Umayyad-era desert palace complex in Homs Governorate, central Syria, built in the 8th century under Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik. It is one of several Umayyad rural complexes constructed as seasonal residences and administrative bases.
The complex includes fortified enclosures, a mosque, residential and reception buildings, and engineered water features intended to support agriculture and leisure in an arid setting. Its plan reflects the palace-stronghold type common to early Islamic desert estates.
Built during the reign of the Umayyads, the site functioned as a seasonal palace and administrative centre and illustrates the period’s rural architecture and hydraulic works. Over time the complex fell into ruin, and its remains have been subject to archaeological study.
Located in a desert area of Homs Governorate in central Syria, the site stands away from major modern urban centres and is accessible from regional roads through the Syrian interior.
