Qashliq
Archaeological Site Former medieval Siberian city and archaeological site
Remains of the medieval city Qashliq (Isker), former capital of the Siberian Khanate; attracts historians and archaeologists interested in medieval Siberia and Tatar history in Tyumen Oblast.
Qashliq (also rendered as Isker or Sibir) was the medieval capital of the Khanate of Sibir in western Siberia. It served as the political centre of the Siberian Tatars before the Russian advance in the late 16th century.
The site is primarily of archaeological and historical interest rather than a developed tourist attraction; it is visited for its earthworks, ruins and historical associations with the Khanate of Sibir and early Russian expansion.
Qashliq was the seat of the rulers of the Khanate of Sibir until it was taken by Russian Cossack forces led by Yermak Timofeyevich in 1582. After that conquest the region came under growing Russian influence and the former khanate centres declined.
The site lies in present-day Tyumen Oblast in western Siberia. It is inland within the Ob-Irtysh river basin of northwest Asia.
- 1582 conquest: Captured by the Cossack leader Yermak and his forces in 1582, an event that marked the expansion of Russian control into western Siberia.
