Putra Square
Plaza Central Putrajaya square facing Putra Mosque
Broad ceremonial plaza in Putrajaya framed by the pink-domed Putra Mosque and government buildings. Photographers, architecture fans and boat-tour passengers gather here, especially for evening light and waterfront views.
Putra Square (Dataran Putra) is the principal ceremonial plaza of Putrajaya, Malaysia’s planned federal administrative city, located beside Putrajaya Lake. It was developed as part of the city’s master plan and serves as a civic focal point for events and national celebrations.
The open, paved plaza is framed by landmark buildings including the pink-hued Putra Mosque and the government complex Perdana Putra, and it provides clear sightlines across the lake. Visitors use the square for photography, civic events, and as a starting point for lake cruises.
The square was laid out during Putrajaya’s development as the federal administrative centre in the late 1990s and early 2000s and remains the city’s main public ceremonial space. It is maintained by Putrajaya Corporation.
The plaza sits on the shore of Putrajaya Lake within the centre of Putrajaya city, easily reachable from the city’s transport links and surrounded by government offices, parks, and formal landscaping.
- Function: The square functions as Putrajaya's main ceremonial plaza and is laid out to provide clear views of the mosque and government complex across the water.
- Best time and viewpoint: Late afternoon and evening provide the best light for photography of the mosque and surrounding government buildings; boat tours on Putrajaya Lake give different viewpoints of the square.
What to See #
- Putra Mosque: A large pink-domed mosque that sits on the edge of the square and Putrajaya Lake; visible from the plaza and a frequent photographic subject at sunrise and sunset.
- Perdana Putra: The federal administration complex housing the Malaysian Prime Minister's offices, forming the skyline backdrop on the opposite side of the square from the mosque.
