How to Get to Puntas de Valdez
Puntas de Valdez is best reached overland from Montevideo: fly to Carrasco (MVD) then continue by intercity bus or car. Local public transport on the final leg is limited, so plan transfers or a taxi from San José de Mayo.
Carrasco / Montevideo International (MVD): Uruguay’s main international airport. From Carrasco you can take the airport shuttle or local taxi to Montevideo’s Tres Cruces bus terminal (approx. 30-45 minutes). From Tres Cruces catch an intercity bus to San José de Mayo (typical journey ~1.5-2 hours) and then a local taxi or colectivo to reach Puntas de Valdez; combined public-leg costs are typically UYU 250-700 depending on operator and seat class.
Laguna del Sauce / Punta del Este (PDP): This airport serves the east coast and offers seasonal connections; reaching Puntas de Valdez from Punta del Este involves long overland travel via Montevideo (several hours) and is rarely the most direct option.
Train: Uruguay’s passenger rail network is very limited and not a reliable option for point-to-point travel to small coastal hamlets; do not plan on using rail for this leg.
Bus: Intercity buses depart Montevideo’s Tres Cruces terminal to San José de Mayo frequently (operators include multiple national companies). From San José de Mayo or nearby towns you will need a local taxi, remis or infrequent local colectivo to reach Puntas de Valdez; bus fares Montevideo-San José commonly run in the UYU 200-600 range and take about 1.5-2 hours.
