Punta La Marmora is the highest mountain on the island of Sardinia, rising to 1,834 metres within the Gennargentu massif. The peak is named after the 19th-century geographer Alberto La Marmora and is the island’s topographic high point.
Hikers and mountaineers come for ridge walks, panoramic views across central Sardinia and the island’s highest alpine pastures. Nearby summits such as Bruncu Spina and a series of ridgelines form multi-day trekking options and short day routes from local access points.
The mountain was surveyed and named in the 19th century by Alberto La Marmora during his geological and topographic work on Sardinia. The area has long been used for summer grazing and is part of Sardinia’s traditional upland landscape.
Punta La Marmora sits in central-eastern Sardinia in the Gennargentu range, within the island’s interior highlands. The nearest towns for access and services are small municipalities in the Nuoro/Barbagia area of Sardinia.
