Punta della Dogana is a triangular former customs house at the tip of the Dorsoduro district in Venice, Italy. It is best known today as a contemporary art venue associated with the Pinault Collection.
The site occupies the point where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal and provides wide waterside views across the St. Mark’s Basin. The building’s riverside position and triangular plan are prominent features; inside there are exhibition galleries and temporary international shows.
The tower is crowned by a gilded sphere that is visible from nearby waterfronts and forms part of the site’s visual identity. The restored interiors host rotating exhibitions and installations arranged on multiple levels.
For centuries the building served as the city’s customs house, the Dogana da Mar. It was adapted by architect Tadao Ando and reopened as a contemporary art space in 2009.
The site sits at the extreme tip of the Dorsoduro sestiere, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, close to the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and a short boat ride from Piazza San Marco.
- Best viewpoints: Offers some of the best views across the St. Mark's Basin from the opposite shore at Punta della Salute and the Riva degli Schiavoni.
- Museum use: Restored for contemporary art and reopened as the Pinault Collection's Venice venue in 2009 following an architectural conversion.
