Pune Travel Guide
City City known for its educational institutions
Once a Peshwa capital, Pune mixes Maratha forts like Sinhagad with university campuses, bustling Irani cafés, and street stalls selling vada pav and misal pav. Travelers arrive for historic plazas, classical music, hill treks and the city’s active cultural calendar.
Why Visit Pune? #
A lively blend of Maratha history, university energy and contemporary café culture draws many travelers to Pune. Visitors come for leafy Koregaon Park’s bohemian cafés and the city’s buzzing nightlife, and for savory street-food staples like misal pav and vada pav. Historical depth from Shaniwar Wada and Sinhagad’s hilltop ruins contrasts with the seasonal fervor of Ganesh Chaturthi, when processions and community feasts fill neighborhoods. It also serves as an accessible base for exploring the Western Ghats and nearby hill stations.
Who's Pune For?
Pune has cosy date options - candlelit cafes in Koregaon Park and rooftop restaurants in Viman Nagar. Take sunset walks at Parvati Hill or a quiet historical visit to Aga Khan Palace, then stay in a boutique heritage hotel in Deccan for a low-key romantic weekend.
Families find plenty to keep kids busy: Empress Garden, Rajiv Gandhi Zoo and interactive exhibits at the Pune Tribal Museum. Short drives to Lonavala and Khandala make easy nature day trips, but expect heavy traffic during festivals and hot summer afternoons.
Pune isn’t a classic backpacker hub, but budget hostels cluster around FC Road and Koregaon Park. Excellent rail links and cheap buses make Pune a practical base for low-cost day trips to Lonavala, Pawna and Alibaug, though the city lacks a lively beach-party scene.
Reliable broadband, affordable long-term rents and many coworking spaces (91springboard, WeWork, local cafés) make Pune friendly for remote work. Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar are popular bases. India visa rules mean plan ahead for long stays and health insurance coverage.
Food lovers will dig Misal Pav, vada pav stalls on Laxmi Road and late-night kebab joints in Camp. Pune’s thriving microbrewery scene (Doolally, Effingut and others) and cosy cafes on FC Road satisfy both street-food and plated-dining cravings across budgets.
Trekking to Sinhagad Fort, monsoon waterfall hikes and camping at Pawna reservoir are local staples. For more adrenaline try paragliding in Kamshet or off-road trails near Mulshi; guided tours and weekend groups are easy to join from Pune.
Nightlife peaks in Koregaon Park and Viman Nagar with a string of pubs, rooftop bars and live-music nights. Weekends get busy and cover charges rise; students on FC Road keep things lively and cheap during college season.
Pune sits close to the Western Ghats - Bhimashankar, Mulshi and Bhigwan birding wetlands offer wildlife and scenic lakes. Within the city you’ll find Saras Baug, Empress Garden and peaceful Parvati Hill for short nature breaks without leaving Pune.

How to Get to Pune
Pune is served by Pune International Airport (PNQ) and by a busy railway hub at Pune Junction (PUNE). For international connections many travellers use Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) and continue to Pune by train, bus or car.
Pune International Airport (PNQ): Pune’s main airport is Lohegaon (PNQ), about 10-15 km from Pune Railway Station / central Pune. From the airport you can take a prepaid airport taxi or app taxi (Ola/Uber) to the city centre for roughly ₹300-₹600 and 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. There are also PMPML city buses that serve airport routes; fares are low (around ₹15-₹40) but journeys take longer (30-50 minutes).
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (BOM): Many international and some domestic flights land in Mumbai; travellers often transfer to Pune from here. From BOM you can get to Pune by train (from Mumbai CST/Dadar/LTT to Pune Junction) in about 3-4 hours (fares roughly ₹100-₹700 depending on class), by Maharashtra State Transport or private Volvo coach from terminals in Bandra/Dadar (approx ₹300-₹800, 3-4 hours), or by a private taxi (approx ₹4,000-₹6,000, 3-4 hours). From Mumbai airport you’ll first need a short taxi/ride-hail to a main rail/bus terminal (₹200-₹500, 30-60 minutes).
Train: Pune Junction (PUNE) is the city’s primary railway station and handles long-distance and intercity trains. Regular services link Pune with Mumbai (3-4 hours), Bengaluru, Delhi and other major cities; short intercity fares to Mumbai start from around ₹100 for non-AC/second class and go up for AC/Chair/Sleeper classes. Suburban/local trains also run on commuter corridors (Pune-Lonavala/Talegaon) and are useful at peak times for specific routes.
Bus: Pune has several bus hubs - Shivajinagar Bus Stand and Swargate are the main intercity/state-transport terminals, while PMPML operates city services. State-run MSRTC and private operators run frequent Volvo/non-AC coaches to Mumbai, Kolhapur, Satara and other cities (Pune-Mumbai Volvo roughly ₹300-₹800, 3-4 hours). City buses are very cheap (typical fares ₹10-₹60) but can be slow and crowded; use them for budget travel across the city.
How to Get Around Pune
Pune is best navigated using a mix of ride-hailing and local buses: use Ola/Uber or bike taxis for convenience and short trips, and PMPML buses or suburban trains for budget travel on fixed corridors. Metro services are an increasingly useful option on the routes they cover; walking works well inside compact neighbourhoods but be prepared for traffic and uneven sidewalks.
- Pune Metro (₹10-₹40) - Pune Metro has begun operations on key sections and is useful for avoiding road traffic on the corridors it serves. Trains are clean and punctual; buy tokens or use a metro smart card/mobile payment where available. Check current operational stretches before you travel, as extensions have been phased in over time.
- PMPML city buses (₹10-₹60) - Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) runs most of the city's buses and is the cheapest way to get around. Buses cover almost all neighbourhoods but can be slow and crowded at peak times - keep extra time for connections. Fares are low and many buses accept cash and digital payments; study route numbers for direct journeys.
- Suburban & intercity trains (₹10-₹500+) - Local suburban trains serve commuter corridors (Pune-Lonavala/Talegaon/Pimpri-Chinchwad) and are good for certain commutes, especially during peak hours. Long-distance trains from Pune Junction connect to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and more - book reserved tickets in advance for overnight journeys. Expect low fares for locals and higher fares for AC/reserved classes on intercity routes.
- Auto-rickshaws (₹40-₹300) - Autos are ideal for short hops, door-to-door trips and areas where cars can't access easily. They should run on the meter - insist on metered fare or use a booking app to avoid negotiation. Typical short fares start around ₹40-₹100; longer city trips will be more.
- Ride-hailing & bike taxis (Ola, Uber, Rapido) (₹60-₹400) - Ola and Uber are widely available and convenient for point-to-point travel; Rapido offers bike-taxi rides that are often faster in heavy traffic. Expect quick pickups in central areas, but watch for surge pricing during peak times and events. Use in-app fare estimates and driver/trip tracking for safety.
- Walking - Walking works best in compact neighbourhoods like Camp, Koregaon Park, FC Road and Deccan Gymkhana where many shops, cafes and sites are close together. Pavements can be uneven and traffic busy, so stay alert and use pedestrian crossings where possible. Walking is the best way to explore markets and college areas at a relaxed pace.

Where to Eat in Pune #

Walk down Fergusson College Road for cafes, Laxmi Road for market snacks and Koregaon Park for late-night dining and craft beer.
You won’t go hungry whether you want a no-frills breakfast at Vohuman Cafe, a classic dosa and people-watch at Vaishali, or a plate of spicy misal from a neighbourhood stall. Nightlife in Pune #
Pune’s nightlife centers on Koregaon Park, Viman Nagar and pockets of Kalyani Nagar - think live-music bars, small breweries and a scattering of hotel rooftops. Most decent bars close around 12:30-1:30 AM on weekdays and hover around 1:30-2:00 AM on weekends; hotel rooftops and some late-night cafes can stay open a bit later. Expect cover charges for big music nights and occasional events.
Dress smart-casual for rooftop lounges and hotel venues - avoid shorts, flip-flops and overly casual gym wear at upscale places. Safety basics: carry ID, use ride-hailing apps (Ola/Uber) for late returns, don’t accept drinks from strangers, and travel in groups if walking through quieter lanes in Koregaon Park. If you plan to drink, arrange a cab home - Pune police enforce drunk-driving rules strictly and fines or arrests are possible.

Shopping in Pune #
Pune’s shopping scene mixes traditional Maharashtrian bazaars with modern malls and a lively boutique culture. The city is known for its textile stalls (think Laxmi Road sarees and Tulsi Baug bangles), long-standing food makers (Kayani Bakery, Chitale Bandhu), and a youthful fashion scene around Fergusson College Road and Koregaon Park. If you want authentic regional sweets and bakery items, go to the-established shops rather than roadside vendors.
Bargaining is part of the fun in markets-start by offering about half to two-thirds of the asking price, then settle around 10-30% off for most goods; for bulk buys expect better deals. Malls and branded stores are fixed-price and accept cards; street vendors prefer cash, so carry small notes and coins. Practical tips: shop markets in the morning to avoid crowds, inspect textiles closely (check zari, seams and pallu on sarees), be wary of ‘authentic’ Paithani claims unless from a reputable store, and keep a small bag zipped in crowded areas to deter pickpockets. If you want high-quality leather or custom tailoring, ask locals for recommended shops-quality varies a lot.
