The Puna de Atacama is a high-altitude plateau region in the central Andes of northwestern Argentina, characterised by arid, high-elevation terrain and volcanic formations. It is part of the greater Andean altiplano corridor.

The landscape is dominated by salt flats, dry lake beds, volcanic cones and scattered high Andean lagoons, with sparse vegetation adapted to cold, dry conditions. Travel is typically for scientific, adventure or scenic purposes rather than conventional tourism, and roads can be remote and seasonal.

The region has long been sparsely populated by indigenous Andean communities and was later mapped during colonial and national explorations of the central Andes. Geological and mining surveys have shaped modern interest in the area.

The Puna de Atacama lies in the high Andes of northwestern Argentina, spanning provinces such as Salta and Catamarca; elevations commonly range from about 3,000 to over 4,500 meters above sea level.

Tips for Visiting Puna de Atacama #

  • Acclimatize in a lower-altitude town (for example Salta or San Pedro de Atacama) before heading into the Puna; altitude sickness and long, remote distances are the chief practical concerns.
  • Start excursions early in the day to take advantage of the typically clearer morning skies and to avoid the risk of afternoon storms on the high plateau.
  • Treat travel logistics carefully: use a high-clearance/4x4 vehicle, carry extra fuel and communications, and plan routes because services and phone coverage are sparse.

Best Time to Visit Puna de Atacama #

Visit the Puna de Atacama in the austral spring-summer (October-March) for milder days and better accessibility, while still expecting very cold nights.

Austral spring-summer (more accessible)
