Pulkovo Heights are a line of hills just south of Saint Petersburg in the region historically known for scientific and strategic uses. The area includes the Pulkovo Observatory, founded in 1839, and has long provided elevated ground overlooking the city.
The heights are known for viewpoints that look north across the Neva lowlands toward central Saint Petersburg and for their association with scientific institutions and transport infrastructure.
During the 20th century the heights were the scene of heavy fighting in the defence of the city during the Second World War and have since been part of the metropolitan outskirts.
Geographically the Pulkovo Heights sit immediately south of Saint Petersburg, forming a raised band of land above the Neva plain and lying close to Pulkovo Airport and suburban districts to the south of the city.
