An island off the southern coast of Singapore that hosts the Semakau Landfill and adjacent managed natural areas. It is used for engineered offshore waste disposal and environmental monitoring.

The site combines engineered landfill infrastructure with areas of mangrove and monitored coastal habitats. Interest is primarily in the landfill engineering and ongoing conservation and monitoring programmes rather than conventional tourist amenities.

Created and developed to provide an offshore landfill for Singapore, the site was commissioned for operations in 1999 and is managed by the National Environment Agency. The landfill was formed by enclosing and linking existing islets to create controlled waste containment areas while preserving designated natural zones.

Sits off Singapore’s southern coast among the island groups that fringe the main island. It is accessed under controlled conditions and is part of Singapore’s southern maritime area.

  • Semakau Landfill: Serves as Singapore's offshore landfill and was commissioned for landfilling operations in 1999; it is managed by the National Environment Agency.
  • Access and visits: Access to the island and its facilities is restricted and controlled; visits for recreation or study normally require permits or are arranged through official guided programmes.

What to See #

  • Semakau Landfill: The managed landfill area on the island that receives and contains Singapore's offshore waste disposal operations; it has engineered containment bunds and a controlled waste burial area.
  • Nature and monitoring areas: Coastal and marine habitats including fringing mangroves and monitored coral and seagrass sites where environmental monitoring and conservation work take place.
