Saparua is an island in Indonesia’s Maluku province, part of the central Moluccas archipelago, with a coastal population and a history shaped by spice-era colonial activity. The island is known locally for its role in early 19th century resistance to Dutch rule.
Coastal villages, colonial-era forts and historical sites are among the island’s features, and it is visited for its local history and coastal scenery rather than mass tourism. Travel to Saparua is typically by ferry from larger islands in the region.
In 1817 the island featured in the uprising led by Thomas Matulessy (Pattimura) against Dutch authorities; colonial forts from the Dutch period also remain as historic structures. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the island continued as a local agricultural and fishing community.
Geographically Saparua lies in the central Maluku group east of Ambon Island in eastern Indonesia, and is administered within Maluku province.

How to Get to Saparua #
Regular ferries run from Ambon (Ambon Harbor/Pelabuhan Yos Sudarso) to Saparua Village; the crossing takes about 1-2 hours depending on vessel. From Ambon Airport, take a taxi to the harbor (roughly 20-30 minutes). Charter boats are available for island-hopping.

- Hire a local guide in Katimun village to visit colonial-era forts and local sasi (ancestral spice sanctuaries).
