Pulau Banggi
Island Malaysia's largest island, rich in coastal villages
Pulau Banggi, off northern Sabah, is Malaysia’s largest island and attracts visitors for sandy beaches, local Bajau and Ubian villages, fishing and diving around nearby reefs.
Pulau Banggi is an island off the northern coast of Borneo in the state of Sabah, Malaysia, and is the country’s largest island by area. It forms part of the Kudat administrative district and is sparsely developed compared with larger Bornean population centers.
The island offers coastal villages, beaches and nearshore coral reefs used by local fishing communities; tourism infrastructure is limited and travel is typically oriented toward nature, snorkeling and local culture. Roads and small ports connect villages on the island but services are less frequent than on mainland Sabah.
Historically the island has been home to indigenous and Malay fishing communities and has seen limited colonial and postcolonial development compared with mainland Sabah. Administrative control and modern services are provided from the Sabah state government.
Pulau Banggi lies off the northern tip of Borneo in the Sulu Sea, within Sabah state. It is north of the Sabah mainland and is one of the outer islands of the Kudat region.
- Largest island in Malaysia: Recognised as the largest island belonging to Malaysia, it is part of Sabah's Kudat administrative area and is known for small fishing settlements and coral-fringed shores.
Tips for Visiting Pulau Banggi #
- Plan your trip in Sabah's dry season to minimize choppy seas and cancelled boat transfers - inter-island crossings are far more reliable with calmer weather.
- Book boat transfers and any island accommodation in advance; Pulau Banggi is remote and services (and onward boats) can fill up or run infrequently.
- Venture beyond the main jetty to visit small coastal villages and quieter beaches-many visitors stay near the arrival point and miss local fishing communities and shoreline viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Pulau Banggi #
Plan island and diving activities during the drier months (March-October) when seas are typically calmer.
