How to Get to Puerto Villamil#

Puerto Villamil is the main town on Isabela Island in the Galápagos; all visitors arrive via domestic flights from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal and then by boat to Isabela. Inter-island boat schedules and domestic flights are limited and should be booked in advance.

By Air

Baltra Airport (GPS): The usual entry point to the Galápagos for visitors heading to Isabela Island (Puerto Villamil). Fly from Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE) to Baltra; flights are domestic and scheduled - expect a flight time ~1.5-2 hours from the mainland. After landing you transfer by bus/short shuttle to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and then take an inter-island speedboat to Isabela (Puerto Villamil), see below for durations and prices.

San Cristóbal Airport (SCY): An alternative if schedules suit; from San Cristóbal you can take a direct speedboat to Isabela. Flight times from mainland Ecuador are similar to Baltra and schedules vary seasonally.

By Train & Bus

Inter-island boat: There are no trains in the Galápagos. Inter-island travel is by public speedboat or ferry: from Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora) to Isabela (Puerto Villamil) the speedboat takes ~1.5-2.5 hours and typically costs about USD 30-50 one-way. From Baltra you usually transfer to Santa Cruz (short bus + dinghy to Puerto Ayora, ~1-1.5 hours) before taking the boat to Isabela.

Bus / Shuttle (on islands): Short shuttle buses and taxis operate on Santa Cruz and between Baltra airport docks and the channel; transfers to/from flights and boats typically cost USD 1-10 depending on segment.

How to Get Around Puerto Villamil#

Getting to Puerto Villamil requires a domestic flight to the Galápagos followed by inter-island boat transfers; schedules are limited so book flights and boat tickets ahead. Once on Isabela, short taxi/golf-cart rides and walking cover local movement, and organized boat excursions handle island sightseeing.

  • Domestic flight (Quito/Guayaquil → Baltra/San Cristóbal) (USD 300-600) - Flights to the Galápagos are the only way to reach the islands from mainland Ecuador; they operate from Quito and Guayaquil and must include the Galápagos entrance control. Book well in advance-flight availability and prices vary seasonally.
  • Inter-island speedboat (USD 30-50) - Public speedboats between Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora) and Isabela (Puerto Villamil) are the standard inter-island link; journey ~1.5-2.5 hours depending on sea conditions. Boats run on a fixed schedule; buy tickets in advance where possible.
  • Island shuttle / dinghy (USD 1-10) - Short boat shuttles and buses transfer passengers from Baltra airport to the ferry docks and to Puerto Ayora. These are coordinated with flights and cost only a few dollars-expect short waits and basic facilities.
  • Taxi / rented golf cart (USD 2-15) - On Isabela, taxis and rented golf carts are common for getting around Puerto Villamil and nearby attractions; roads are sandy and unpaved in places. Taxis are practical for luggage or off-schedule movements.
  • Guided boat trips / excursions (USD 25-120) - Many day trips (snorkeling, wildlife tours) depart from Puerto Villamil by small boat; operators set prices and durations vary. Book with registered operators and confirm what is included (equipment, park fees).
  • Walking - Puerto Villamil is compact and best explored on foot-most accommodation, restaurants and beaches are within easy walking distance. Trails to nearby lagoons and tunnels are also walkable.
