How to Get to Puerto Ayora#
Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island is reached by flights into Baltra (GPS) or San Cristóbal followed by short boat transfers. Once on the islands, travel relies on short ferries, local buses/shuttles and taxis rather than rail.
Seymour / Baltra Airport (GPS): Baltra is the main airport for Santa Cruz Island and Puerto Ayora. International visitors fly via Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE) onto domestic flights to Baltra; flights from Guayaquil or Quito to Baltra typically take about 1.5 hours (flight prices vary widely-expect domestic fares roughly US$150-$400 depending on season). From Baltra you transfer by bus to the Itabaca Channel ferry.
San Cristóbal Airport (SCY): If you arrive on San Cristóbal, you can transfer inter-island by scheduled small-boat services or fly into Baltra and travel across; arriving directly to Santa Cruz via San Cristóbal is less common for visitors to Puerto Ayora but remains an option for island‑hopping.
Train: There is no rail service in the Galápagos.
Bus / Ferry / Water taxi: From Baltra you take the airport bus to the Itabaca Channel ferry crossing (ferry fare approx US$1-$2 one way) then a shuttle bus or taxi on Santa Cruz to Puerto Ayora (about 20-45 minutes from the ferry terminal). Water taxis and private speedboats operate between islands for island‑hopping; prices and schedules vary-book ahead in high season.
How to Get Around Puerto Ayora#
Getting to Puerto Ayora means flying into Baltra or San Cristóbal then taking short ferry/shuttle transfers. Once on Santa Cruz, shared shuttles, taxis, bikes and walking are the main ways to get around.
- Inter‑island Flights (US$150-$400 (one way, domestic)) - Domestic flights (from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal) are the main entry to the Galápagos for visitors. Flights are subject to strict luggage limits and can be seasonal-book well in advance. Expect security checks and park entry controls on arrival.
- Ferry / Water taxi (US$1-$60 (short ferry to inter‑island transfers vary)) - The Itabaca Channel ferry between Baltra and Santa Cruz is a short inexpensive crossing (roughly US$1-$2) with a shuttle on the other side to Puerto Ayora. Inter‑island speedboats and water taxis operate to San Cristóbal and other islands-these are faster but can be pricier and depend on schedule and seas.
- Shuttle Bus / Local Bus (US$1-$5) - On Santa Cruz, shared shuttle minibuses run between the ferry terminal and Puerto Ayora; private shuttles are often included with some hotels or tours. Local buses are limited-most travellers use shuttles or taxis for door‑to‑door service.
- Taxi (US$5-$30) - Taxis on Santa Cruz are readily available and useful for luggage or non‑standard schedules; fares are higher than shared shuttles. Taxis are practical for short transfers to hotels, the Charles Darwin Research Station and beaches outside Puerto Ayora.
- Bicycle / Scooter (US$5-$25/day) - Bikes and scooters are popular ways to explore Puerto Ayora and nearby sites at your own pace. Roads can be bumpy-choose a sturdy bike and watch for pedestrians and local traffic.
