Puerta del Sol
Monument Central Madrid square and key public meeting point
Madrid’s Puerta del Sol is a central plaza marked by the Kilometre Zero plaque and the Casa de Correos clock used for New Year’s Eve; visitors come for the location, shops and street life.
Puerta del Sol is the principal central square of Madrid, Spain, and a longstanding focal point of the city center. It is one of Madrid’s most recognisable public spaces and functions as a commercial and transport hub.
A compact urban square dominated by pedestrian areas, public sculptures and historic facades. Prominent features include the semiclassical façade of the Casa de Correos, an emblematic bronze of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, and the Kilómetro Cero pavement marker that denotes the origin for Spanish road distances. The square is used for public gatherings, street performance and daily commuter flows.
The square evolved from the site of Madrid’s eastern city gate, the Puerta del Sol, and was reshaped several times between the 17th and 19th centuries. The current prominent government building, the Casa de Correos, was completed in the late 18th century and later became the site of the clock used for national New Year observances.
Situated in central Madrid at the junction of several main streets including Calle Alcalá and Calle Preciados, Puerta del Sol sits a short walk from the Royal Palace and the Gran Vía theatre and shopping district. The square is immediately served by Sol metro and Cercanías commuter rail services.
- Transport hub: Located at the geographic and transport heart of Madrid with multiple metro and commuter rail lines converging at Sol.
- New Years celebration: The clock on the main facade is the focal point for Spain's New Years Eve grape-eating tradition each 31 December.
What to See #
- Casa de Correos: Built as the central government building with a clock tower in the late 18th century, now the square's most recognisable facade and meeting point.
- El Oso y el Madroño (Bear and Strawberry Tree): Bronze sculpture that represents Madrid's heraldic animal, located on the eastern side of the square and commonly used as a meeting point.
- Kilómetro Cero plaque: Small marker set in the pavement that denotes the Kilómetro Cero point from which Spain's radial roads are measured.
- Tío Pepe sign: Historic illuminated sherry advertisement on a building facade that has become an iconic visual feature of the square.
