The Puerta de Alcalá is a neoclassical monumental gate in central Madrid, Spain, completed in the late 18th century (1778). It is one of the city’s best-known ornamental gates and a frequent civic landmark.
Situated at the Plaza de la Independencia on Calle de Alcalá, the monument has five arches - three central vehicle arches and two smaller pedestrian arches - with sculptural decoration on its façades. The structure is a common photographic and meeting point and is often included on walking routes that pass nearby museums and parks.
Commissioned by King Charles III and designed by the architect Francesco Sabatini, the gate was built in the late 18th century and served as a formal city entrance at the edge of Madrid’s historical core. It has been the subject of restoration work to preserve its stonework and sculptures.
The gate stands directly opposite the main entrance to Retiro Park in central Madrid, within walking distance of major central hubs and transport links. It sits on Calle de Alcalá at the Plaza de la Independencia, making it easy to reach from surrounding districts.

- Best time to visit: Evenings when the gate is illuminated offer the best photographic views; the area is busiest during daytime and at weekends.
