Pucará de Tilcara

Pucará de Tilcara is an archaeological fortress complex perched on a hillside above the town of Tilcara in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy Province. It features stone terraces, building foundations, and defensive works from pre-Hispanic occupation.

The site includes visible terracing and the remains of dwellings and ceremonial spaces, together with an on-site museum that exhibits artifacts recovered during archaeological work. The location provides both cultural interpretation and vantage points over the valley below.

The fortress was constructed and occupied by local indigenous peoples prior to and during the period of Inca expansion into the region, and it served defensive and settlement functions. Excavation and conservation efforts have made the complex accessible to visitors as an open-air archaeological site.

The Pucará overlooks the town of Tilcara in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a high Andean valley in northwestern Argentina that is served by regional roads connecting to Jujuy and other provincial centres.
