Prudhoe Castle is a medieval fortress on the north bank of the River Tyne in Northumberland, close to the town of Prudhoe. The site originated as an early Norman motte and was developed in stone during the 12th century with further alterations in later medieval centuries.
The castle retains a substantial stone keep, curtain walls and domestic ranges that together form one of the region’s more complete medieval strongholds. Visitors can view the masonry, internal rooms and battlements that show successive phases of construction from the Norman period through the later Middle Ages.
Historically the castle served as a border stronghold and noble residence through the medieval period; it changed hands among local aristocratic families and was adapted over time for domestic and defensive use. Later centuries saw parts fall out of use but much of the structure survives as a scheduled monument.
