The Provisional Theatre (Prozatímní divadlo) was a 19th century theatre company and building in Prague, established as a temporary national theatre for Czech-language drama and opera in 1862. It played a central role in the Czech National Revival and operated until the opening of the National Theatre complex in the early 1880s.
The venue staged operas, plays and concerts and became the main Prague platform for Czech composers and dramatists in the 1860s and 1870s. It hosted premieres and regular performances of works in Czech and functioned as the principal Czech-language stage in the city during its existence.
The Provisional Theatre was founded and managed as a temporary civic institution to provide a national stage while plans and fundraising proceeded for a permanent National Theatre. The theatre company and its building were active from 1862 until about 1881, after which activity moved to the completed National Theatre building.
The theatre sat in central Prague and served the city population; it is historically tied to the later National Theatre institutions and the 19th century cultural developments of Prague.
