Priorat DOQ

Priorat DOQ is a wine-producing region in inland Catalonia, Spain, recognized under Spain’s highest wine quality classification as a Denominación de Origen Calificada. The region is notable for its steep, terraced vineyards and distinctive slate soils.

Wineries and vineyards are set on steep slopes with terraced plantings, offering tasting rooms, cellar visits and short vineyard walks; production area totals on the order of a few thousand hectares. The wines are typically concentrated, ageworthy reds made predominantly from Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan).

Viticulture in the area has ancient roots, with a modern quality-focused revival beginning in the late 20th century that elevated the region’s international reputation. That revival led to formal recognition of the region’s distinct quality and status within Spain’s wine classification system.

Situated in the interior of Catalonia within the Priorat comarca of the Tarragona area, the region occupies steep, rugged terrain with terraced vineyards and small wine villages rather than large urban centres.

• DOQ status: One of only two Spanish wine regions with the highest quality designation, sharing that status with Rioja.
• Grapes and soils: Steep terraced vineyards on characteristic slate-based 'llicorella' soils produce powerful, concentrated red wines primarily from Garnacha and Cariñena grapes.

• Falset: Serves as the main town and administrative centre of the Priorat comarca, with wine cooperatives, cellars and tasting rooms acting as a local hub.
• Gratallops: A small village at the heart of the wine-producing area known for a high concentration of wineries and boutique producers.
• Porrera: A recognised wine-producing village whose vineyards produce some of the region's distinctive single-vineyard wines.
• Scala Dei: A historic settlement with medieval roots close to several older terraces and vineyards central to the region's viticultural heritage.
