Príncipe
Island Small Atlantic island with rich biodiversity and reserves
Príncipe island preserves old plantation estates, lowland rainforest reserves, secluded beaches and wreck-diving sites; tourists come for birdwatching, chocolate tours and small eco-lodges.
Príncipe is the smaller of the two main islands of the nation of São Tomé and Príncipe and forms an autonomous region. It is known for its intact tropical ecosystems and biological diversity.
The island offers rainforests, volcanic hills and secluded beaches, together with small settlements and plantations. Tourism focuses on wildlife watching, hiking and low-density resort stays rather than mass tourism.
Príncipe was encountered by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century and was subsequently colonized; plantation agriculture, especially sugar and later cocoa, shaped much of its economy during the colonial period. In modern times it has moved toward conservation and eco-tourism, with international recognition for its biodiversity.
Príncipe lies in the Gulf of Guinea northeast of São Tomé island and is administered as an autonomous region of the country of São Tomé and Príncipe.
- Main town: Santo António is the main town and administrative centre on the island, serving as the island's primary port and settlement.
How to Get to Príncipe #
Príncipe is reached from São Tomé Island by short domestic flight into Príncipe Airport (the island’s airfield) from São Tomé International Airport, or by scheduled/charter passenger boats and ferries that sail from São Tomé harbour to Santo António (service levels are seasonal). On arrival at Santo António you can reach most accommodations and beaches by very short taxi rides or on foot-the main village and the airport/port are the island’s primary access points.
Tips for Visiting Príncipe #
- Arrive via Santo António (the island's small airport or the scheduled ferry from São Tomé) and plan morning arrivals-that gives you the most daylight for transfers and excursions on the compact island.
- Hire a local guide based in Santo António before heading into Obo Natural Park; many trails are unmarked and guides are best for locating endemic birds, unique flora and interpreting plantation-era ruins.
- Take short boat trips to Ilhéu Bom Bom and set aside time to visit old plantation houses (roças) such as Roça Sundy-these quieter historical spots are often missed by day-trippers who stay only in town.
