Prince Albert National Park
National Park Saskatchewan national park of boreal forest and lakes
Saskatchewan park around Waskesiu Lake offering boreal forest, mixed wetlands, hiking, canoeing, and camping; visited for wildlife viewing and seasonal outdoor recreation.
Prince Albert National Park is a large protected area in central Saskatchewan that conserves boreal forest, lakes and parkland landscapes. Established in the early 20th century, the park preserves a mix of water bodies and woodlands and is a centre for outdoor recreation in the region.
Visitors commonly base themselves at Waskesiu Lake, where a small resort community, visitor facilities and boat access are concentrated; from there users can reach beaches, trails and boat routes. The park also contains extensive backcountry areas of lakes, hiking trails and canoe routes used for wilderness recreation and wildlife observation.
The protected area was established to preserve a representative tract of boreal ecosystems and to provide recreational opportunities; facilities and management have expanded since its creation to support visitor use while maintaining wildlife habitat. Ongoing conservation and visitor services focus on balancing recreation with ecosystem protection.
Prince Albert National Park lies in central Saskatchewan roughly 140 kilometres north of Saskatoon; the park surrounds Waskesiu Lake and extends into boreal forest and lake country typical of the region.
- Wildlife viewing: The park protects a transition zone of boreal forest and parkland; wildlife includes elk, moose, black bear, wolves and many bird species, making it a strong wildlife-viewing destination.
What to See #
- Waskesiu Lake and village: Waskesiu Lake and the small resort community on its shore include the park's visitor centre, marina and main accommodation cluster and act as the park's service hub.
- Backcountry lakes and trails: Extensive boreal backcountry of interconnected lakes, trails and mixed forest that supports hiking, canoeing and wildlife viewing across the park's protected area.
How to Get to Prince Albert National Park #
Prince Albert National Park is reached by road from the city of Prince Albert; the park’s main community and visitor hub is Waskesiu. Most visitors drive from Prince Albert (northbound) - driving time to park entrances and Waskesiu is typically under an hour depending on which park entrance you use. There is limited or no regular public transit into the park, so private car or organized tour is the usual option.
Tips for Visiting Prince Albert National Park #
- Enter the park via the Waskesiu townsite and stop at the Parks Canada visitor centre to get maps and seasonal wildlife advice; Waskesiu is the hub for services, trails and boat launches.
- Plan wildlife viewing for dawn or dusk along quieter park roads and near water bodies-early and late hours give the best chance to see elk, deer and birds with fewer visitors around.
- If you want a less-visited historic site, arrange a boat or canoe trip to Ajawaan (Grey Owl's) cabin-it's off the main trails and often missed by day-trippers, so plan logistics in advance.
- Remember a Parks Canada pass is required for entry and book campsites or popular services in high season well ahead of time.
