Prespa National Park
National Park Protected area around Prespa Lakes with rich biodiversity
Straddling borders of Albania, North Macedonia and Greece, Prespa National Park centers on twin lakes, birdlife and mountain villages; visitors come for kayaking, hiking and observing endemic species.
Prespa National Park on the Albanian side protects part of the Prespa lake basin in southeastern Albania, conserving freshwater wetlands, islands and surrounding mountainous terrain. The park forms a portion of the larger transboundary Prespa ecosystem shared with Greece and North Macedonia.
The park supports a mixture of aquatic and upland habitats that are important for migratory and breeding birds as well as freshwater biodiversity; it includes shoreline, reed beds and slopes with mixed forest and pastures.
The protected area was established to conserve the lakeshore habitats and the cultural landscape of the Prespa basin and has been managed in cooperation with neighbouring countries as part of regional conservation initiatives.
Geographically the park lies in Korçë County near Albania’s southeastern border, encompassing stretches of the Albanian shore of Great Prespa Lake and nearby hills and villages. The area is sparsely populated and characterized by lakeshore plains rising to surrounding ridges.
- Transboundary park: Part of a transboundary conservation effort, the park protects wetlands, islands and mountain slopes shared with neighbouring Greece and North Macedonia, making it important for cross-border biodiversity.
