Prešeren Square
Plaza Central Ljubljana square with Prešeren monument and fountains
Prešeren Square anchors Ljubljana’s old town with the Prešeren statue and Triple Bridge; tourists linger for riverfront cafés, regular events, and easy walking access to the castle and markets.
Pre61eren Square is the central public square in Ljubljana, Slovenia, named after the national poet France Pre61eren and anchored by a bronze monument erected in 1905. It functions as the city’s principal civic and pedestrian crossroads in the historic center.
The square is dominated by the pink facade of the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the bronze statue of Pre61eren, while the Triple Bridge by Jo7e Ple0dnik provides a distinctive three-arched crossing over the Ljubljanica River. The surrounding area contains cafes, tram and pedestrian routes that lead into Ljubljana’s compact old town and riverside promenades.
The square developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries as Ljubljana expanded and was named for France Pre61eren to honor his central role in Slovene literature and national identity. Architect Jo7e Ple0dnik remodelled the river crossings in the late 1920s and early 1930s, giving the site its current configuration.
Pre61eren Square sits on the left bank of the Ljubljanica River in central Ljubljana, within easy walking distance of the castle hill and main pedestrian streets of the old town.
- Central meeting point: The square sits at the junction of major pedestrian routes in Ljubljana and is a primary starting point for walking tours of the old town and riverside promenades.
What to See #
- Pre61eren Monument: A bronze monument to the Slovene national poet France Pre61eren, erected in 1905 and located at the center of the square; the statue faces the triple-arched bridge and the old town.
- Triple Bridge (Tromostovje): A set of three linked bridges across the Ljubljanica River redesigned by architect Jo7ee Ple0dnik in the early 1930s, forming a key pedestrian link between the square and the old town.
- Franciscan Church of the Annunciation: A late-Baroque Franciscan Church of the Annunciation with a distinctive pink facade that defines the eastern side of the square and dates largely from the 17th century.
