Praslin
Island Seychelles island with beaches and Vallée de Mai reserve
Praslin island offers Vallée de Mai, long beaches like Anse Lazio, snorkeling reefs and small guesthouses; visitors come for beach days, endemic palms and quiet island roads.
Praslin is an inner-island of the Seychelles archipelago, known for its white-sand beaches and the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island is a major leisure destination within the Seychelles, offering beaches, reserves and small village centres.
Beaches such as Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette feature among Praslin’s primary attractions, offering sheltered swimming and snorkeling alongside dramatic granite headlands. Vallée de Mai provides a contrasting inland experience with endemic palm forest and guided trails.
Praslin’s settlement and land use have long combined small-scale agriculture, coconut production and tourism; visitor services concentrate at a few harbours and resort nodes while much of the interior remains wooded or protected.
Situated northeast of Mahé within the inner Seychelles islands, Praslin is reached by short domestic flights or ferry from Mahé and lies close to smaller islets such as Curieuse.
- Size and facilities: Praslin is the second largest inner island of the Seychelles and combines high-quality beaches with the Vallée de Mai palm reserve; visitor services are concentrated around the main harbours and resorts.
What to See #
- Vallée de Mai: A UNESCO-inscribed palm forest reserve on the island that contains the endemic Coco de Mer and is accessible by short trails from the nearby village areas.
- Anse Lazio: A shoreline on the island's northwest coast widely regarded as one of the Seychelles' top beaches, notable for its white sand, clear water and granite headlands.
- Anse Georgette: A more secluded beach often accessed via hotel arrangements or short walks, frequently listed among the island's standout shorelines.
How to Get to Praslin #
Praslin is reached from Mahé by the inter-island Cat Cocos ferry (Victoria to Baie Sainte Anne) or by short scheduled flights to Praslin’s airport at Grand’Anse. On arrival at Baie Sainte Anne ferry terminal or the airport, most resorts and beaches are a short taxi or rental-car drive away and local buses circulate around the island with stops close to main hotels and beaches.
Tips for Visiting Praslin #
- Visit Anse Lazio very early or late afternoon to avoid the peak crowding caused by day-trippers and inter-island ferries; the light is also better for photos at those times.
- Arrive to Praslin via the main ferry terminal at Baie Sainte Anne and plan onward transfers in advance-taxis and hotel shuttles are limited around peak ferry arrivals.
- Make time for Vallée de Mai early in your stay (nearby) rather than squeezing it into a busy departure day; many visitors underestimate how much time the reserve and nearby beaches warrant.
Best Time to Visit Praslin #
Praslin is most pleasant in the drier months (May-September) when trails and beaches are at their best.
