Prague Castle
Castle Historic castle complex and presidential seat in Prague
Perched above the Vltava, Prague Castle is a vast complex of St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane; visitors come for medieval architecture, cathedral stained glass and city panoramas.
Prague Castle is a large historic complex on a hill overlooking the Vltava River and serves as the formal seat of the Czech head of state. The site dates back to the 9th century and contains a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings.
Key highlights include the soaring St. Vitus Cathedral, the medieval Old Royal Palace and the narrow historic street known as Golden Lane; the complex also contains museums, galleries and administrative buildings. The castle functions as both a major tourist destination and an active governmental site, so some areas have restricted access.
Founded in the early medieval period, the castle was developed over centuries as the centre of Bohemian rulers, later Habsburg administration and now the presidency of the Czech Republic. Major building phases took place in the 10th to 14th centuries and through later restorations.
The castle stands in the Hradcany neighbourhood of Prague on the left bank of the Vltava River, a short walk or tram ride from the Old Town across the Charles Bridge. Its terraces provide prominent views over central Prague.
- Visitor planning: Entry tickets often include several parts of the complex and an audio guide is useful to navigate the spread-out site and different opening times.
- Best views: Views across the Vltava and Prague's red-roofed cityscape are best from the castle terraces and the South Gardens during clear weather.
What to See #
- St. Vitus Cathedral: A Gothic cathedral that dominates the complex; construction began in 1344 and it contains royal tombs, chapels and the coronation vaults of Bohemian kings.
- Old Royal Palace: A medieval palace area that housed Bohemian rulers' administrative and residential rooms, including the Vladislav Hall used for ceremonies.
- Golden Lane: A short street of small historic houses created in the 16th century that later housed castle workers and goldsmiths; now preserved with period interiors and small shops.
- Basilica of St. George: An early medieval basilica dating from the 10th century that contains Romanesque architecture and relics of early Bohemian saints.
How to Get to Prague Castle #
Prague Castle sits on a hill above the Lesser Town. Take Prague Metro Line A to Hradčanská (short uphill walk of ~5-10 minutes) or Malostranská (about 10-15 minutes uphill), or take tram 22/23 to the Pražský hrad stop which drops you very close to the main entrance. From Wenceslas Square the castle is about 2-3 km northwest (a 10-15 minute drive depending on traffic).
Tips for Visiting Prague Castle #
- Arrive at opening on a weekday and start with the paid sites (St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane); mid-morning to early afternoon is when large tour groups and cruise bus crowds peak.
- Approach the castle from Malá Strana via Nerudova Street or the small stairways from the Charles Bridge side to avoid the busiest entrance routes from Hradčany Square and enjoy quieter views on the climb.
- Buy a Prague Castle circuit ticket in advance or head to the ticket office before entering the main courtyards so you can visit the Lobkowicz Palace and the Armoury early - those indoor attractions often sell out or queue long later in the day.
- Don't skip the southern terraces and bastions for panoramic views over Prague; many visitors focus on the cathedral and Golden Lane and miss these quieter viewpoints and photo angles.
Best Time to Visit Prague Castle #
Best visited late spring or early autumn for pleasant weather and smaller crowds while still enjoying full access to the grounds and views.
