Pragser Wildsee
Lake Alpine lake in the Dolomites with turquoise waters
A mountain lake in the Braies valley of the Dolomites, Pragser Wildsee (Lago di Braies) is popular for lakeside walks, boat rentals and alpine views along marked trails.
Pragser Wildsee (also known by its Italian name Lago di Braies) is an alpine lake in the Prags Valley in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Italy, set beneath dramatic limestone peaks. The lake is famous for its clear green water and mountain reflections and is a common starting point for hikes into the surrounding Fanes-Sennes-Braies area.
The shoreline includes a small boathouse and pier where traditional wooden rowboats operate in the warmer months; a lakeshore path provides an accessible circuit offering uninterrupted views of the water and surrounding cliffs. Photographers and hikers frequently use the pier and viewpoints on the southern shore for low-angle reflections.
The lake occupies a glacially influenced basin at about 1,496 metres above sea level and drains to form the Braies stream. Its high-mountain setting means conditions vary seasonally and winter can freeze the surface.
Pragser Wildsee lies in the Braies municipality of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol in northern Italy, within the Dolomites UNESCO area and is accessed by local roads from valley towns and mountain passes.
- Altitude and conditions: Sits at high altitude, about 1,496 metres above sea level, so weather can change rapidly and the lake freezes in winter at times.
- Visitor pressure: Extremely popular in summer and autumn for its scenery; parking near the lake is limited and queues can form on busy days.
What to See #
- Boathouse and pier: A boathouse and small wooden pier on the lake's edge that provides rowboats for hire and is the traditional launch point for short boat trips across the water.
- Lakeshore trail: A well-marked lakeshore footpath that follows the perimeter, providing close-up views of the water and surrounding Dolomite peaks and forming the most common short walking route for visitors.
How to Get to Pragser Wildsee #
Pragser Wildsee (Lago di Braies) is accessed from the small valley road that leads up to the lake in the Braies/Prags area of South Tyrol. There is a lakeside car park and the shore is reached on foot by a short lakeside path (a few minutes’ walk from the parking area).
In summer months the lake is commonly reached by car from the nearby towns in the Dolomites; seasonal shuttle buses also run to the lake from the local valley centres. There is a short walking loop around the lake, so allow time to park and walk to the water.
Tips for Visiting Pragser Wildsee #
- Plan to be at Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) at sunrise for mirror-like reflections and to beat the large tour buses and parked-car crowds that build later in the morning; the lakeshore is noticeably quieter before 7-8am in summer.
- If you drive, use the designated parking and shuttle options rather than stopping along the single access road - the car park fills fast in high season and local traffic controls sometimes restrict private cars.
- Walk the full shoreline circuit rather than stopping at the boat rental area; the far end and western shore (toward the refuge) give different perspectives and are usually less crowded than the central jetty.
Best Time to Visit Pragser Wildsee #
Best visited in summer (June-September) for full access and milder conditions; autumn offers fewer crowds and good colours.
