Praděd
Mountain Highest Moravian-Silesian Range peak and ski destination
The 1,491 m summit of Praděd crowns the Hrubý Jeseník range; visitors come for alpine hiking, winter skiing and the observation tower’s wide mountain views.
Praděd is the highest peak of the Hrubý Jeseník mountains in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, reaching 1,491 metres above sea level. It is an important regional high point and recreational destination for hiking and skiing.
The summit area includes a prominent broadcast tower with an observation facility and nearby visitor amenities, and multiple marked trails approach the peak from surrounding mountain huts and trailheads. The mountain forms part of a network of winter sports slopes and summer hiking routes.
Historically the summit has hosted successive observation and transmitter structures; development around the peak over the 20th century established the modern broadcasting installation and visitor infrastructure. The area has been used for alpine recreation and mountain tourism for many decades.
Praděd stands in the central Hrubý Jeseník massif in northeastern Czechia, within mountainous terrain of the Moravian-Silesian Region and near the border with the Olomouc Region. Nearby towns serve as trailheads and bases for visits to the mountain.
- Access and conditions: Marked mountain trails and winter ski slopes provide access; summit conditions can change rapidly so weather-appropriate clothing is recommended year-round.
What to See #
- Summit (Praděd): Summit area at 1,491 metres elevation hosting the mountain's highest point and trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints across the Hrubý Jeseník range.
- Transmitter tower and visitor facilities: A tall broadcast tower and adjacent visitor facilities near the summit that include an observation platform and seasonal amenities for hikers and skiers.
Tips for Visiting Praděd #
- Plan for morning or late-afternoon summit visits for clearer views-Praděd's summit is often cloud‑shrouded midday, and the observation tower rewards sunrise/sunset light.
- Start from the Ovčárna/Praděd parking area or well-marked mountain trails and follow the official paths to the summit; these provide the most direct access and avoid unnecessary route-finding above the treeline.
- Check seasonal conditions before setting out: winter brings ski operations and icy trails while fog and strong winds can close summit facilities, so verify access and opening hours for the observation tower and any summit restaurants.
