Praça do Comércio is a large riverside square in central Lisbon, Portugal, located on the northern bank of the Tagus River and historically known as Terreiro do Paço. It is one of the city’s principal public spaces and forms the riverfront edge of the Baixa district.

The open, paved plaza is framed by long, arcaded government and commercial buildings and is dominated by the equestrian statue of King José I and the Rua Augusta Arch. The square provides direct riverfront access, large clear sightlines for events and promenading space that links to nearby historic districts such as Alfama and Chiado.

The site has been Lisbon’s principal riverside ceremonial square for centuries; after the destructive 1755 earthquake it was rebuilt under the Marquis of Pombal’s urban plan and given the broad, regular layout seen today. The square has housed royal and administrative buildings historically associated with maritime trade and the Portuguese state.

Praça do Comércio sits at the lower end of Lisbon’s Baixa, directly beside the Tagus estuary in the city centre. It is immediately adjacent to major pedestrian routes into Lisbon’s historic neighbourhoods and to river transport piers.

  • Best viewpoint: The Rua Augusta Arch on the square provides a roof-level viewpoint with views over the plaza and the Tagus river.
  • Rebuilt after 1755 earthquake: The square was rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake as part of the Pombaline reconstruction of the city centre.

It’s also an easy 5-10 minute walk downhill from Baixa-Chiado station (metro lines Blue and Green) or from Rossio.

Tips for Visiting Praça do Comércio #

  • Go at first light for photos and to avoid the big tourist and coach groups that arrive later in the day.
  • Use the Terreiro do Paço (Terreiro do Paço/ Baixa-Chiado metro area) or approach along the riverside for a more peaceful arrival rather than coming straight down Rua Augusta at peak hours.
  • Buy a ticket to the Rua Augusta Arch viewpoint (Arco da Rua Augusta) - the elevated terrace gives one of the best panoramic views of the square and the Tagus.
