Praça da Liberdade is a principal public square in the centre of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, historically associated with the state government and civic institutions. It sits at the heart of the city’s administrative and cultural district.

The plaza is edged by notable government-era buildings and parkland and is frequently used for public events, official ceremonies, and pedestrian circulation across downtown Belo Horizonte. It functions as an urban green and meeting space within the planned grid of the city.

The square was established as part of Belo Horizonte’s founding and urban plan at the turn of the 20th century and has long hosted government offices and public functions. In recent decades several of the surrounding historic buildings have been repurposed to house museums and exhibition spaces.

The square lies in downtown Belo Horizonte, within the city’s central administrative area and close to major avenues and public transport lines that connect it with other city neighbourhoods.

• Civic core: Part of Belo Horizonte’s original planned civic core and still functions as an administrative and cultural focal point in the city centre.
• Cultural circuit: Several historic government buildings around the plaza have been adapted for cultural use, forming a small museum and exhibition circuit within walking distance.

What to See#

• Palácio da Liberdade: A late 19th-century government palace that faces the square and historically housed state administration; the building now forms part of the cultural and civic ensemble around the plaza.
• Square and gardens: Public gardens and paved open areas that host civic events and are surrounded by several cultural and administrative buildings converted into museums and exhibition spaces.

From Belo Horizonte city center the square is a short walk: head west from Praça Sete along Avenida Afonso Pena for about 1.2 km, or take the municipal buses that stop on Avenida Afonso Pena (many city lines). The nearest metro stop is Estação Central/Vilarinho on the metro line; from there it is about a 15-20 minute walk.

• Visit early morning to see the light on the Palácio da Liberdade and to avoid tour groups
• Walk the circuit of former government buildings - the façades show different architectural eras and are often overlooked from the central fountain
• Stop at one of the cafés on the square's eastern edge to watch office traffic and local life
