Pozzo di S. Patrizio
Museum Renaissance double-helix well in Orvieto
Orvieto’s Pozzo di San Patrizio is a Renaissance well with a double-helix staircase designed to let mules descend and ascend separately. Visitors descend to view the engineering and stonework.
Pozzo di S. Patrizio in Orvieto is a Renaissance-era well built to secure a reliable water supply for the hilltop town. It was commissioned in the 1520s and is noted for its double-helix stair system that allowed traffic to move in both directions without meeting.
The well’s defining feature is the two independent spiral ramps that wind around a central shaft, permitting donkeys or people to descend and ascend simultaneously while carrying water. Visitors can descend the stair ramps to view the engineering and the well chamber below.
Construction was commissioned in the aftermath of the 1527 sack of Rome and was carried out in the first half of the 16th century; the design is attributed to Renaissance architects working for the papacy. The well was intended as a secure, long-term water source for Orvieto’s population.
The well sits on the sloped approach to Orvieto Cathedral on the Corso Cavour side of the town center, within short walking distance of the Duomo and other central monuments.
- Proximity to the Duomo: The well is immediately downhill from Orvieto Cathedral and is commonly visited together with the cathedral complex.
How to Get to Pozzo di S. Patrizio #
Pozzo di S. Patrizio (St. Patrick’s Well) is in Orvieto’s historic centre next to the Duomo. By train take regional or InterCity services on the Rome-Florence line to Orvieto station; from the station take the Orvieto funicular up to the city (Piazza Cahen) then walk ~5-10 minutes to the Duomo and well. By car follow the A1 Autostrada del Sole to the Orvieto exit; Rome is roughly 120 km by road (about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic).
Tips for Visiting Pozzo di S. Patrizio #
- Visit first thing in the morning or late afternoon to avoid mid-day coach and tour-group peaks; the lighting at those times also highlights the well's stonework for photos.
- Follow the one-way circulation: the well has two separate spiral staircases (designed so people going up and down don't meet); stick to the directional route to prevent bottlenecks in the narrow stairways.
- Combine your visit with a short walk to Orvieto's Duomo and the town's viewpoints so you see the well in the context of the hilltop city rather than as a standalone stop.
