Poyang Lake

Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China by surface area, situated in northern Jiangxi province where multiple rivers converge before joining the Yangtze. Its extent fluctuates widely between wet and dry seasons, producing extensive seasonal wetlands.

The lake is internationally important for waterbirds and other wetland wildlife, serving as a major wintering and stopover area for migratory species. Boat trips from nearby riverside towns allow seasonal birdwatching and observation of the lake’s changing shoreline.

Hydrologically the lake acts as a flood-storage basin for the middle Yangtze and its area and depth change drastically with rainfall and upstream flow; these seasonal changes are a defining feature of the landscape and local livelihoods.

Poyang Lake sits in northwestern Jiangxi province, with river ports and towns such as Jiujiang on the lake’s northern margins providing the principal access points.
