Main image

Powis Castle is a medieval castle and country house near Welshpool in Powys, Wales, set within formal terraced gardens and commanding views over the Severn valley. The site combines a fortified medieval structure with later domestic rebuilding and extensive historic gardens.

The terraced gardens, with formal terraces and clipped hedging, are a principal attraction and are laid out on steep slopes below the house to produce long axial views. Inside the castle are historic state rooms and collections that reflect its centuries of occupation as a noble seat.

The castle originated as a medieval stronghold and was substantially altered and adapted into a family residence over the 16th to 18th centuries by the family that came to be associated with the property. Its role shifted from purely defensive to domestic and representational as the surrounding region stabilized.

Powis Castle stands just outside the town of Welshpool in mid‑Wales, overlooking the Severn valley; it is readily reached from Welshpool and is within Powys county in central Wales.

  • Visitor highlight: Managed by the National Trust and open to the public; the terraced gardens and sweeping views of the surrounding Welsh countryside are the site's highlight.
