Poverty Point
Park Large prehistoric earthwork complex and UNESCO World Heritage
Poverty Point in northeastern Louisiana features monumental prehistoric earthworks and concentric ridges dating to the Late Archaic period; the UNESCO World Heritage site includes a museum, walking trails and archaeological displays.
Poverty Point is a prehistoric earthwork complex in northeastern Louisiana near the town of Epps, notable for its large-scale carved and built landscape dating to the Late Archaic period (roughly 1700-1100 BCE). The site represents one of the most important archaeological landscapes of eastern North America.
The site includes a series of concentric earthen ridges and multiple mounds arranged around a central plaza; a prominent platform mound rises above the ridge complex. An on-site museum and marked trails provide close views of the ridges, mounds, and excavated areas.
Archaeological research has shown the complex was built by a mobile hunter-gatherer community that organized large-scale construction events; excavations since the 20th century have documented artifact assemblages, trade goods, and construction phases. The site has been preserved and interpreted as a state historic site.
Poverty Point sits on a terrace of the lower Mississippi River valley in northeastern Louisiana. It is located inland from the river floodplain and is accessible by road from nearby towns in the region.
- Visitor access: Access to the central mounds is via marked paths from the visitor center; some areas are protected and off-limits to protect fragile deposits.
- UNESCO status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 for its scale and unique prehistoric earthen architecture in North America.
What to See #
- Major earthworks: Central earthen features at the site including a large platform mound known locally as Mound A and a series of concentric ridges that form the habitation and ceremonial area.
- Visitor center and trails: On-site museum and interpretive trails that present artifacts, site plans, and contextual information about the Late Archaic occupation.
Tips for Visiting Poverty Point #
- Start at the site's visitor center for the orientation film and exhibits before walking the interpretive boardwalks and driving the earthwork loop-the center provides the best overview of the site's layout and significance.
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid Louisiana's heat and mosquitoes during summer; the exposed earthen mounds offer very little shade.
- Respect the protected archaeological area by staying on the designated paths and boardwalks; many of the earthworks are fragile and access is controlled to preserve them for research and interpretation.
Best Time to Visit Poverty Point #
Visit in spring or autumn to avoid Louisiana's summer heat and humidity while comfortably exploring the site and trails.
